italy

Italy is the fourth largest economy in Europe. The country’s GDP is made up by the sectors agriculture (1.8%), industry  (25%), and services – trade, finance, transportation, tourism (73.1%).

In eco-innovation scoreboard index Italy presents quite a strong performance with respect to the other European countries, and it is the 9th ranked country in EU28. In particular, Italy excels with respect to the European average under the dimensions “Eco- innovation activities”, “Eco-innovation outputs”, “Resource efficiency outcomes” and “Socio- Economic outcomes”. However, the dimension “Eco-Innovation inputs” it is 25% lower than the EU average

Italy’s eco-innovation and circular economy development are characterised by the increase in recycling activities (e.g. in textile, mineral oil, packaging, construction waste, etc), strong R&D performance in water pollution abatement, waste management, and renewable energy areas, as well as by the initiatives in industrial symbiosis.

The still-low private and public R&D expenditures can be explained by the Italian industrial structure, which is mainly composed of small-medium enterprises (SMEs) and family businesses, which have only limited access to credit and often are not of a large enough scale to undertake R&D projects. Nevertheless, the country shows great potential for specialising in renewable energy technologies, which have been well supported by policies and regulations .

Intesa Sanpaolo – Office and IT use - energy efficiency and environmental sustainability

Labels: Italy

Italy-IntensaIntesa SanPaolo Spa Bank, the second largest bank institute in Italy, operates an estimated number of 60,000 computers (data Intesa Sanpaolo 2009) within their central and local branch offices. They have implemented an IT procedure by which computers are automatically switched off during the night and on Sundays (after a serious of controls that shutting off is safe) and rebooted again in the morning.

Determinants:

  • Barriers are specific hardware requirements need to be met by single workstations.

  • The awareness of similar IT features and the relevant benefit of such switch-off procedures needs further promotion.

  • A central IT management group is required, but e.g. bank institutes are supposed to maintain centralised servers and IT routines.

  • Drivers are that the procedure can be applied and downscaled to a number of tertiary sectors that operate numerous terminals (administration offices of large companies, telecommunication, public offices, insurances)

  • No significant upfront financial investment on IT hardware was apparently involved. It may be implemented stepwise after a traditional phase-out of workstations.

Sustainability effects:

The procedure, already been implemented since 2007, saves primary energy (for each workstation and potentially for air conditioning) and puts less stress on the computers in use, thus possibly reducing malfunctioning and maintenance. It also saves time during the rebooting process in the morning, i.e. operators find their workstations ready for use.

It has been disseminated by means of informing collaborators repeatedly over the intranet News, together with invitation to a correct use of other office instrumentation. Cost reductions in terms of electrical energy and GHG emission were reported in the company balance sheets of 2007 and 2008.
