Sustainable alternatives to the current range of packaging
The investigation and introduction of more sustainable alternatives to the current range of packaging taking into account the specific requirements associated with Halen Mon’s particular products, markets and customers.
The result of a ReMake eco-innovation voucher. Halen Mon were awarded a voucher to develop a more environmentally friendly packaging solution to the ones currently used for their products. The project used the “eco-design compass”(Fussler & James, 1996) one of the most successful streamlined Eco-innovation tools as the basis for assessing one solution relative to another. The eco-design compass considers;
The out put of the work was that overall the company could make both notable environmental improvements and cost savings through the alternatives identified. Pouches in particular offer the preferred and probably the most sustainable option at the 100g - 250g size, and in addition could result in financial savings in the region of thousands of pounds per year based on current usage, without significant investment.
Furthermore the solutions developed are felt to be practicable in terms of Halen Mon’s operations and suitable in terms of brand perception and user-friendliness. The solution presented would make the product itself visible through the packaging, demonstrating the unique visual appeal of Halen Mon’s product. The managing director said "sheer delight that the completed project looks like it will reduce unit cost, increase profile on shelf, save Co2 and packaging and reduce stock holding costs in square metres and in absolute cost and improve our lead time to deliver orders to customers . This means our environmental policy is actually meaningful and combined with a major investment in solar panels and reusing our own steam/ water we are making real strides in sustainability."
Barriers and Drivers
The solutions had to be practicable in terms of Halen Mon’s current production operations. It had to be suitable in terms of brand perception and user-friendliness. The new solution must also maintain product integrity with air tight and water resistant properties.
The implementation of the new packaging will result in financial savings in the region of thousands of pounds per year based on current usage, without significant investment.
The cost saving associated with this solution will help to retain jobs in the company which is situated in an area of high unemployment. The improved “brand image” will boost employee moral, as well as drive sales of the product range.
Carbon footprint (g CO2e) – 23.04 compared to 32.7g for the existing cardboard tube. In addition to this, the packs are 50% lighter and the packing density of these packets will be improved, giving a further improvement in the environmental performance during transport.
