Italy is the fourth largest economy in Europe. The country’s GDP is made up by the sectors agriculture (1.8%), industry  (25%), and services – trade, finance, transportation, tourism (73.1%).

In eco-innovation scoreboard index Italy presents quite a strong performance with respect to the other European countries, and it is the 9th ranked country in EU28. In particular, Italy excels with respect to the European average under the dimensions “Eco- innovation activities”, “Eco-innovation outputs”, “Resource efficiency outcomes” and “Socio- Economic outcomes”. However, the dimension “Eco-Innovation inputs” it is 25% lower than the EU average

Italy’s eco-innovation and circular economy development are characterised by the increase in recycling activities (e.g. in textile, mineral oil, packaging, construction waste, etc), strong R&D performance in water pollution abatement, waste management, and renewable energy areas, as well as by the initiatives in industrial symbiosis.

The still-low private and public R&D expenditures can be explained by the Italian industrial structure, which is mainly composed of small-medium enterprises (SMEs) and family businesses, which have only limited access to credit and often are not of a large enough scale to undertake R&D projects. Nevertheless, the country shows great potential for specialising in renewable energy technologies, which have been well supported by policies and regulations .

italy_Giant_resizedThe GIANT & GIEM system objective is the production at competitive costs and low environmental impact of electric power, hydrogen, and low cost desalinated water by tidal power.

The GIANT-GIEM project is the result of the work of a research team of designers and technicians working in the field of Renewable Energy  that developed and patented a system for producing electricity from waves. The objective of this research was the production at competitive costs and low environmental impact of electric power, hydrogen, and low cost desalinated water by tidal power, a renewable source with great untapped potential.

The system directly transforms the potential energy of waves into electricity using an electronic system and a special generator (GIANT). Its performance allows a return on investment in less time than the other systems that use the waves and wind or hydro and it can also increase the installed capacity at a later time because the system is modular. GIANT and GIEM are able to transform the potential energy available without the use of organs of the mechanical type which is the case of systems currently in use. In the latter case the loss of efficiency occurs since any mechanical member absorbs a part of the energy available to overcome the friction which normally exists is therefore overcome. This system thus allows the production of energy with only electrical-electronic organs thus optimizing both the costs and yields.

From the environmental point of view, both solutions provide practically negligible, impact as no polluting materials are used, or  in contact with the water, nor within the generators. Moreover no permanent installations are needed and above all they can be placed off the coast, remaining either sliglty above or completely below water. The system is equivalent to the photoelectric solar and wind energy, there is no production of CO2, there is only production of renewable energy, for 1 KWh of electricity, there are 0 grams of CO2, similarly for the production of hydrogen, low - cost for automobiles or for industrial plants and for the production of desalinated water or hot water.

Two ongoing projects are: 1) the installation of buoys in the Giudecca Canal (district of San Basilio) in Venice for outdoor lighting and 2) the installation of a system of production of tidal energy at CNR in Venice.

Economic Performance

The system allows the production of energy with only electrical-electronic organs thus optimizing both the costs and yields.

Environmental Impact

The system is equivalent to the photoelectric solar and wind energy, there is no production of CO2, there is only production of renewable energy, for 1 KWh of electricity, there are 0 grams of CO2, similarly for the production of hydrogen, low - cost for automobiles or for industrial plants and for the production of desalinated water or hot water.
