Since 2013, Bulgaria has made efforts to improve in its eco-innovation performance through the implementation of several Operational Programmes, including Strategy for smart specialization, initiatives on waste management and recycling, energy efficiency, environment, transport, science and education, and innovation and competitiveness.

The main challenges for eco-innovation in Bulgaria are related increasing domestic and foreign investment opportunities in eco-innovation and circular economy, promoting efficient use of resources by achieving high energy efficiency (especially in homes and building infrastructure), further developing renewable energy sources, and improving sustainability practices within the transport sector. Increased national investments from government and industry would significantly encourage more support for eco-innovation and circular economy initiatives. Furthermore, the legislative framework needs further improvement to encourage more investment in the sector.

Nonetheless, several significant drivers of eco-innovation exist, such as rise in awareness from both business, citizens and government on the benefits of green products and technologies, high skilled human resource and knowledge capital and Bulgaria’s leading regional position in the information and communications technology (ICT) sector .

Eco charging station for electric vehicles and scooters.

bulgaria_Solar_resizedThe  Eco-charging station is supplied with power from its own photovoltaic system, which closes the cycle of ecological and economical transport with electrical cars. The station requires no additional infrastructure and provides direct use of  the solar energy without loss in transmission distribution  via an electrical grid.

This is  the first charging station for electric vehicles, which produces energy from the sun. It was built by  "Green energy", the  project consortium;  and its location – in front the biggest expo center in Sofia -   was strategically chosen pursuant to a recommendation  by the chief municipal architect of Sofia, as owners of electric cars can charge them while attending events at the center.

The station is supplied with power from its own photovoltaic system, which closes the cycle of ecological and economical transport with electrical cars. It requires no additional infrastructure and provides direct use of  the solar energy without loss in transmission distribution  via an electrical grid.

Both, electric cars  and  scooters can be loaded  free of charge on the station. When  not in use for vehicles, the energy  is utilized   for  the night lighting of  the InterExpo center  building. .

The energy  will be available  free of charge with the use of special cards which  can be obtained  from the company which developed and implemented the  project"A1eko" - funded by the Small Grants Programme of the Global Environment Fund and UNDP.

The investment cost is 60,000.00 levs., or  approximately 30,700.00 euros.  Most of the money is invested in the photovoltaic panels, a module for an energy flows’ control, and the  battery bloc; which are all imported.  The Eco charging station has a maximum daily output of 23 kwh.  For a year, it could power 1,440 electric vehicles and 3800 electric scooters. A run from a charge of 50 km yeilds  an average annual reduction of atmospheric carbon dioxide by 10.5 tons.

According to industry cluster "Electric Vehicles", at the moment there are about 1,500 electric vehicles - mainly scooters and bicycles. Currently,  the electrical cars are about 50, most of which are models converted from a normal engine to one running on electricity.

Barriers and Drivers
A barrier for the development of this sector  is the lack of infrastructure for the use of electriacl cars and other electrical vehicles in the country. Promoting the production and consumption of environmentally-friendly transportation vehicles, and independence from fossil fuels is the driving force underlying  the eco-innovation.

Economic Performance
Creation of infrastructructure for market penetration of  new to the market  products -  electrical cars and other  electrical vehicles, thus filling  existing niche for a  transport on  alternative  fuel.

Social Performance
Ensuring consumer access to alternative power for their vehicles  for free. 

Environmental Impact
Reduction of atmospheric carbon dioxide by 10.5 tons annualy.
