The Czech Republic has a relatively good overall eco-innovation performance according to the 2015 Eco-innovation scoreboard, ranking 13th out of 28 EU Member States with an overall score of 99, which is 1% below the overall EU average. The evidence collected from available sources indicates the “eco-innovation” situation in the Czech Republic is perhaps not as strong as the index suggests.

In general, the research and innovation activities and the policy framework has improved in recent years. Nevertheless, there are still some major bottlenecks, which prevent the country and its enterprises from fully realising their potential. Many of these bottlenecks originate from the change from a centralised economy, as many companies are still recovering from the privatisation process and their owners and managers arguably lack the ambition to invest in innovative products and technologies, and the concepts of the circular economy and eco-innovation are yet to become widely embedded. Another barrier is that the legislative and policy framework is seen as fragmented and incoherent, with supporting programmes, mainly for research and development (R&D), whose activities are implemented temporarily, partly or not at all. However, several R&D funding programmes supported by the state or by EU funds are effective in capitalising on the opportunities this field offers and are assisting in the process of developing innovative technologies and tools. A number of recent projects directly support eco-innovation or the circular economy, for example a fusion between bio- and nanotechnologies to treat wastewater.

Additional policy developments are needed in order to speed up progress towards a circular economy as well as to increase the level of research and innovation activity in the Czech Republic. These policy developments should include further support to local businesses as well as investment in the public research and education systems

Small wastewater treatment plant separating sludge by using a submerged membrane module

Development of activation wastewater treatment plant with submerged membranes useful for the treatment of wastewater from small sources of pollution. The technology of wastewater treatment using submerged membrane for a separation of activated sludge from the treated water is very powerful, causing a high quality of runoff, ensuring hygienization of water, i.e. removal of viruses and bacteria. The project dealt with the choice of material of membranes, verification of their permeability, the mode of operation, washing and regeneration.

The development and manufacture of wastewater treatment plant should be extended on this principle in the CR. Implemented under the TANDEM program to support science and research.The development was ensured by the ENVI-PUR, s.r.o. company– provision of supply capacity, ensuring the trial operation, laboratory tests - together with Brno University of Technology. The use of this technology is assumed to be extended significantly.
