"Nicosia shuttle" Eco-city bus
The Demades Design company develops an ecological city bus with a view to promoting the use of both public transportation means and renewable energy sources in transportation. The design of the eco-city bus focuses on four pillars: sophisticated design, ecology, accessibility and innovation. "Nicosia shuttle" aspires to become the hallmark of Nicosia as regards public transportation, especially in the centre of the city.
The "Nicosia Shuttle" project is about designing a system of public transportation, using small, flexible and modern buses to cover the historic center of Nicosia and cover the connection with the new mall. The company has based its proposal for pubic transportation on specially designed vehicles with specifications that take into account the peculiar shape and width of the narrow streets of Nicosia city.
The final design of the new eco-bus was presented in 2010, followed by a public presentation of the bus. The designer supported the view that the vehicle should reflect a modern lifestyle and fully meet the needs of the Cypriots. Therefore, beyond the aesthetic side, great emphasis was given to the interior design which was framed by ergonomic chairs, and appropriate selection of materials. The new small city bus will be able to carry 22 passengers having 12 seats, two of which for people with disabilities. The cost of the new public transport vehicle, is estimated at around 140,000€. The new bus incorporates energy saving systems, renewable energy features, aerodynamic design and reduced weight. It can utilize solar energy (through rooftop solar panels) to produce electricity. The vehicle uses a latest generagation engine with reduced emissions. The ultimate goal of this project is to raise citizens awareness on the use of public transportation means and to promote the use of technologies that respect the environment, while at the same time optimise public transportation system operation.
Barriers and Drivers
The main drivers of this eco innovation are:
Market demand: The initial design of the eco-city bus was based on the need for an alternative means of transportation in the narrow streets of the centre of Nicosia.
Social needs & Green ethics: Construction of a bus combining sophisticated design, ecological technologies, accessibility of groups with special needs and innovation are the key characteristics of the new small city bus "Nicosia shuttle".
Sustainable transportation: The design of a new and flexible minibus, which is compatible with the specificities of the historic center of Nicosia and simultaneously meets modern expectations, will give very useful results that can be used in connection with the introduction of an upgraded service in the city center and the renewal of the bus fleet of the municipality.
Strong motivation was also the fact that "Nicosia shuttle" will be a moving advertisment in the roads of Nicosia promoting sustainable use of energy sources and boosting publics interest to public means of transportation.
Key barrier of this eco-innovation is:
Design and production cost: The design and construction of this project requires relatively large investments. The company has not received any public grant .
Even though its initial cost is slightly higherthan that of common buses of its category, the eco-city bus is projected to directly decrease the operating cost of the bus fleet, due to its low fuel consumption rate.
The bus is properly designed for all population groups and particularly for people with mobility problems, having a low floor for easy access by elderly and children but also a platform for wheelchairs.
The whole idea of re-designing the public transportation system (which includes the construction of the eco-city bus), includes many other innovations related to passenger information, purchase tickets and entertainment with services such as internet access, user-friendly bus applications.
The eco-city bus presents numerous environment friendly technologies that will have a positive result in decreasing carbon footprint on public transportation and promoting the use of green transportation to the public. The bus during all stages of its developments was desinged to incorporate energy saving systems, renewable energy features and aerodynamic shape. Its weight is reduced compared to other vehicles of its category. The bus makes use of solar energy through rooftop solar panels producing electricity. Finally, a new generation engine with reduced emissions was added to its specifications.
